Councillor Ray Morgon, Leader of Havering Council, has responded to a recent article by Romford Councillor David Taylor, in the Havering Daily.

He writes:

“We share Simon Hutchinson, our Police Superintendent’s concerns on how this data has been interpreted.

“We know the impact that crime has on our communities, but also, how the fear of crime can often be higher than the crime rates themselves, and how detrimental it is to residents when people inflate the fear of crime further.

“Romford Town Centre does have a higher crime area compared to the rest of the borough but that is because it is a night time economy hub and has greater footfall compared to a non-night-time economy towns. It is a main transport hub with links to international ports and it is also the reason why the majority of our resources (75% of our public realm CCTV), a large proportion of our public engagement events, much of our MOPAC grant funding and other supplementary BID funding/volunteer activity is spent in Romford (Night Marshalls, Youth Outreach, Street Pastors, Safety Hub, Street Doctors, My Local Bobby, Romford Town Wombles to name a few)  which does not feature in our lower crime towns.

“Therefore, I want to reassure residents that we are already working with all agencies to strengthen enforcement and improve visibility to help prevent crime, and also to support victims of crime.”
