Residents living near Newton’s Corner in Rainham, were delighted last weekend as the much loved patch of green near their homes, was officially granted Village Green status.

The move marks a major community victory, preserving the open space for generations to come. Locals have long valued Newton’s Corner as a peaceful, natural area in an increasingly developed landscape. The new designation protects the green from future development and ensures it remains a communal space that everyone can enjoy.

“It’s a huge relief,” said one local resident. “We’ve watched so much of our green space disappear over the years. To know this area is now safe means everything to our community.”

Local ward councillors Graham Wlliamson and Natasha Summer, were joined by Councillor Ray Morgon-Havering’s Leader of the Council, to officially open the new village green. The team were also joined by local residents who had campaigned for the green and local Safer Neighbourhood officers led by Sergeant Basit.

Village Green status not only safeguards the land but also formally recognises its importance to the community. Residents use the space for walking, meeting, and enjoying a bit of nature in the heart of Rainham — and now, they can continue to do so without fear of losing it.

This decision stands as a shining example of what local people can achieve when they come together to protect what matters.
