HRA members and local residents from Marshalls and Rise Park ward came together on Saturday morning to tackle litter and fly-tipping in Moray Way, an area that has long been blighted by rubbish.

Armed with bin bags, gloves and litter-picking tools, volunteers worked together to clear the streets and green spaces. The event was organised by local ward councillor Philippa Crowder and action team member Rob Chesney, for Marshalls and Rise Park ward, and attended by residents and other HRA team members. Cllr. Crowder and Rob, who met with enforcement officers recently to discuss the issue, have been campaigning for stronger measures to deter offenders.

“Moray Way has been a hotspot for fly-tipping for far too long,” said Cllr Crowder. “We’re grateful to everyone who turned up today to help. It shows the strength of our community when people work together to improve their neighbourhood.”

The councillors have been petitioning for CCTV to be installed in the area to catch those responsible for illegal dumping and to help keep the community cleaner in the long term.

Fly-tipping remains a persistent problem across Havering, with council crews regularly called out to remove dumped waste. Local residents say the problem is not only unsightly but can also attract vermin and damage the environment.

Saturday’s litter pick ended with several bags of rubbish collected and a renewed sense of pride in the area. Volunteers say they hope to make the event a regular fixture until longer-term solutions are put in place.
