Oliver Tops the List as Havering’s Most Popular Boys’ Name — While Muhammad Leads in Four Other East London Boroughs

Havering has once again differed from the rest of east London — despite being officially classed as one of its boroughs.

New figures released by the Office for National Statistics reveal that Havering’s most popular boys’ name is Oliver. This contrasts sharply with four out of six east London boroughs, where the name Muhammed takes the top spot.

Based on the latest ONS data from 2024, here’s a breakdown of the number of babies named Muhammad (including the spelling ‘Mohammed’ as it was the most common variation used in the sources) in East London boroughs: 

  • Newham: 152 babies were named Muhammad.
  • Redbridge: 107 babies were named Muhammad.
  • Waltham Forest: 83 babies were named Muhammad.
  • Barking and Dagenham: 29 babies were named Muhammad.
  • Tower Hamlets: 145 babies were named Mohammed.
