Havering Residents Urged to Prepare for Nationwide Emergency Alert Test
Havering residents will receive a loud, siren-like alert on their mobile phones on Sunday 7th September at 3pm, as part of a UK-wide test of the Emergency Alerts system.
This government-led test is designed to ensure the country is prepared for major emergencies such as flooding, extreme weather or public safety threats. The system, introduced in 2023, allows urgent alerts to be sent directly to mobile phones across the UK.
The alert will sound for approximately 10 seconds—even if your phone is on silent—and a message will appear on screen confirming that this is only a test and no action is required.
All modern mobile phones and tablets using 4G or 5G networks will receive the alert. Older devices that rely solely on 2G or 3G may not be compatible.
A government spokesperson said: “This test is an important part of our preparations for future national emergencies. While no action is required, it’s important that people know what to expect.”
The last national test in April 2023 reached millions of phones and has since been used to send real alerts during severe weather events. Authorities say the system helps save lives by warning residents quickly and clearly when threats emerge.
What You Need to Know:
Date: Sunday 7th September 2025
Time: Around 3:00pm
Duration: Around 10 seconds
Who Will Receive It: All users with 4G or 5G smartphones
What to Do: Nothing – it’s only a test
If you are driving at the time of the alert, do not check your phone. The government advises drivers to wait until it is safe and legal to do so.
Helping Vulnerable Residents
Residents who support individuals at risk—such as victims of domestic abuse—are reminded that they can opt out of the alerts. Instructions are available on the official gov.uk alerts page. However, the government encourages people to remain opted in where possible, as the alerts could one day save lives.
Havering Council and emergency services are supporting the test and encouraging local community groups and households to help raise awareness, particularly among the elderly or those less familiar with smartphone technology.
