This summer has proven to be one of the most challenging in recent memory for our police officers who are repeatedly called to face impossible situations with very little support. Despite being one of the most used emergency services, policing today is one of the least appreciated.

Officers across London and the boroughs are being stretched beyond their limits. They are constantly deployed to cover protests, walk into volatile situations, and face hostility that is both physical and verbal. Crowds shout them down, spit at them, and label them traitors. But the truth is, they did not create the situation they are now expected to control.

No matter which way they turn, officers are vilified. Many are mentally and physically burnt out. The workload is relentless. Add to that the pressure of having to stand for hours in the face of loud, angry protests, and it becomes clear just how thankless their task is.

Morale, already low, is sinking fast. Frontline officers are left to manage increasing unrest with shrinking resources. The protests are now relentless and are rapidly becoming a dominant part of the job. Officers don’t just face aggression on the front lines—they face neglect behind the scenes. Because those in authority, those who should be supporting them, are often nowhere to be found.

This is the reality of policing in the summer of 2025: a critical service held together by dedication, while those in authority continue to look the other way.
