Romford welcomes a fresh wave of community fitness as former Gladiator Champion Weninger Irwin launches ‘Cool Rowings’ – a space dedicated to getting Havering active, healthy and full of energy.

Havering is proud to host its very own Mr Active – the incredibly motivational and high-spirited Weninger Irwin. Known to many as the first ever Gladiator Champion back in 1992, Weninger has since channelled his passion into promoting community wellbeing, fitness, and fun — right here in Romford.

‘Cool Rowings’ officially opens its doors tomorrow at The Mercury in Romford and it promises to be more than just another fitness spot. The aim is simple: “Let’s get Havering active.”

The store features a variety of rowing machines where locals can try rowing for the first time, revisit a long-lost hobby, or even challenge friends in a community-driven space. But Weninger’s mission goes far beyond exercise.

Rowing machines lined up in a fitness space at Cool Rowings in Romford, promoting community wellness and exercise.

“Every Tuesday morning from 10am I do special chair-based exercise at Mecca Bingo in the Mercury to support all those who are either chair-based,” Weninger told the Havering Daily.

With infectious energy and an inclusive approach, Weninger is determined to help every corner of our community – from young children to older residents – rediscover the joy of movement.

“Everyone is welcome here, whether you are a child, adult, or a senior member of the community. I work with all people and my aim is to help get as many members of our community active as possible. I’m still being a Gladiator – but for the community!”

Weninger isn’t just about physical fitness – his work focuses on the full spectrum of wellbeing. His positivity is contagious, and his drive to bring fun into fitness is exactly what Havering needs.

He added:

“I’ve worked with local children across Havering who are now top three in the borough for their respective sports. It’s about inspiring every generation.”

As recent statistics show Havering among the highest in London for obesity, there has never been a more vital time to champion active living – and Weninger is leading the charge.

So whether you’re curious about rowing, looking to reenergise your week, or simply want to connect with your local community, head to The Mercury and meet Weninger at Cool Rowings. It could be the first step towards a healthier, happier you.
