Romford MP Pays Tribute To Lord Tebbit: “Norman Was A Towering Figure In British Politics And Also A Particular Supporter Of The Romford Conservative Association.”
The Member of Parliament For Romford-Andrew Rosindell has shared a tribute following the passing of his long-time friend and political mentor, Lord Tebbit.
“I am deeply saddened this week to learn of the passing of my friend and political mentor, Lord Tebbit. Norman was a man of immense courage, formidable conviction, and above all, had an unwavering patriotic belief in the greatness of our United Kingdom.
He was a friend since my days in the Young Conservatives and, along with Margaret Thatcher, a source of great inspiration over many decades.
Norman was not only a towering figure in British politics and the Conservative Party, he was also a particular supporter of the Romford Conservative Association, serving as our Honorary Patron for more than a quarter of a century. I was honoured to welcome him to my constituency on several memorable occasions.”
Mr Rosindell recalled Lord Tebbit’s active support over the years, including during key moments in local and national campaigns.
“In 2000, Norman joined me in standing outside the Town Hall in Romford to back my campaign for the Union Jack to be flown every day by Havering Council from the main flag mast above the Town Hall and of course, he backed our campaign to save the pound sterling rather than Britain joining the Euro.
During the 2001 General Election, he returned to Romford to support my campaign to be elected as our town’s M.P., spending time in Romford Market speaking with traders and local residents. He famously held up a bunch of bananas to highlight the nonsense of the E.U.’s policy on “straight bananas”!
In March 2005, a moment of particular pride was when Lord Tebbit stood alongside Lady Thatcher and myself for the re-opening of my constituency office, what is now “Margaret Thatcher House”.”
Reflecting on Lord Tebbit’s legacy, Mr Rosindell praised his principled leadership and resilience in the face of personal adversity.
“Lord Tebbit was an amazing man who played a major part in helping Margaret Thatcher change Britain for the better. He challenged socialism, trade union bullying and all forms of left-wing ideology that had done so march harm to our country. He and his wife, Margaret, paid a terrible price after the Grand Hotel Bombing, Brighton in 1984, by the I.R.A., but despite his injuries and having to care for his wife, he continued to fight for his country in government and as Party Chairman in 1987, secured a third term in office for Margaret Thatcher.
Norman Tebbit was a truly great man – principled, determined, and deeply devoted to his country. I shall miss his wisdom, his friendship, and his unwavering belief in our nation. I will honour his memory by carrying on the fight for Britain!”
Mr Rosindell concluded:
“My thoughts and condolences are with his family at this sad time.”
