Romford Councillor Uncovers Deliveroo Accounts For Rent.
Councillor David Taylor has uncovered local social media accounts with Deliveroo riders offering their accounts for rent to others. This has been raised with the company’s Chief Executive.
Following regular complaints from residents, Councillor David Taylor has undertaken an investigation into delivery accounts in the local area and raised concerns with the head of Deliveroo.
Complaints from residents often include poor rider behaviour, such as ignoring traffic rules, as well as drivers not matching the picture on the account. This has caused concern and fear that the riders could be working illegally and that proper checks are not in place.
Councillor Taylor uncovered a local social media group that showed riders are renting accounts to others. The accounts show riders both asking for an account to rent as well as replies from those with accounts, providing contact details on how those looking can get in touch.
After raising these with the Chief Executive of Deliveroo, Councillor Taylor received an explanation that this practice is within the rules and that Deliveroo has checks in place to prevent illegal working.
Despite the response, Councillor Taylor said that it is clear something is not working.
Councillor Taylor said;
“The discovery that someone can rent out their account is worrying. We’ve all had the situation where the delivery rider doesn’t look like the image on the account and that’s worrying for many.
In the same way we expect to know that our local cab driver has been fullychecked, people want that same assurance about delivery riders.
Poor rider behaviour, such as ignoring traffic rules, is a safety hazard and it is a growing problem in our town. I’m not one to sit around and complain, without taking action, so have taken this to the top.
Deliveroo’s response is, in part, reassuring. However, I do not have faith that their system is working. If the image on the account shows a young man, and a woman turns up, as has happened to me, then something is not working.
I will continue to flag these with Deliveroo, and encourage residents to report any poor rider behaviour that they spot, to Deliveroo and the local police”.
