On the hottest day of the year with temperatures reaching 34c across Havering, a grass fire broke out in Rainham between Glebe Road and Farm Way. Flames soared high as houses as the fire could be seen from the A1306.

The fire broke out just after 4pm on the land spanning the end of Glebe Road.Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to the grass fire.

One hectare of shrubland was alight. The fire was within metres of houses with residents being evacuated from their properties due to the high levels of choking fumes being emitted.

The incredibly brave and efficient work of our firefighters saw the fire promptly under control and then extinguished. This could have potentially been catastrophic for residents living literally next to the grassland. However, thanks to the heroic work from our firefighters no one was injured and no properties were damaged.

Crews remained on scene throughout the evening damping down hotspots.

New Road was closed and Upminster Road North and Rainham Road were very busy.

A wildfire response vehicle had been deployed at the incident. These vehicles provide off-road capability enabling the transportation of additional equipment closer to fires on open ground. Each vehicle carries approximately 475 litres of water, a backpack blower, ear defenders, beaters and misting lance technology, which allows firefighters to pump water and drive, enabling them to tackle grass fires more quickly and safely. The Brigade is currently trialling four wildfire response vehicles across the capital.

Control Officers took the first of 21 calls at 16:23 and have mobilised firefighters from Wennington, Hornchurch, Ilford and surrounding fire stations to the scene. The fire was under control by 18:24.
