Havering MPs Take a Stand: All Vote Against Controversial Welfare Bill
As the government’s key Welfare Bill passed through Parliament last night, despite fierce backlash and a rebellion from within Labour ranks, communities like Havering are left wondering — what comes next? The Bill, which has sparked outrage for its potential to strip vital support from those most in need, was passed by 336 votes to 261.
But in Havering, something remarkable happened.
All three of our Members of Parliament — Andrew Rosindell for Romford, Margaret Mullane for Dagenham and Rainham, and Julia Lopez for Hornchurch and Upminster — stood together and voted against it. Despite sitting on opposite sides of the political spectrum, each MP made a clear choice: to reject legislation that critics warn will unfairly target the vulnerable, disabled, and working poor.
Particular praise must be given to Margaret Mullane, who despite potential pressure from her party, rebelled and voted with her conscience. Standing up for the people she represents, she sent a powerful message — that Havering won’t sit quietly while decisions are made that hurt our residents.
The bill’s passage comes amid rising concerns about the cost of living, increasing food bank usage, and soaring mental health challenges linked to financial hardship. Critics argue that instead of offering support during a time of unprecedented crisis, the bill punishes those already struggling to stay afloat.
And now, as the dust settles, the focus turns to the future. What impact will this legislation have on our borough? How many residents will be affected? And how will our local services cope under the strain?
One thing is clear — our MPs did not stay silent. They made their voices heard on behalf of Havering.
