Fight To Save Former Harold Wood Library From Developers As Community Hub Plans To Be Unveiled Tonight.
Residents urged to back proposal to transform cherished site into a vital community space
This evening, a crucial meeting will be taking place at St Peter’s Church in Gubbins Lane, Harold Wood, as campaigners and local residents come together to fight for the future of the much-loved Harold Wood Library. Once a busy and well-used site, the library now sits closed—its future uncertain, as developers eye it up for yet more housing in the area.
The Harold Wood Foundation, a group of dedicated locals passionate about preserving the heart of their community, will be presenting their draft project proposal to transform the library building into a dynamic community hub. Their vision includes restoring access to a library service, creating a welcoming tea and coffee area, providing youth activities, establishing a men’s wellbeing space, and much more.
The meeting starts at 7pm and residents are strongly encouraged to attend to find out more, have their say, and get involved.
An application has already been submitted to Havering Council for the site to be designated as an Asset of Community Value under the Localism Act of 2011. This would provide vital protection and allow the community time to bid for the building and preserve it for local use.
Locals fear that without public support and swift action, yet another valuable community site could be lost forever to developers. As housing developments continue to rise across the borough, many feel that enough is enough—and that community infrastructure must be protected.
Tonight’s meeting could be a turning point. The future of Harold Wood Library is hanging in the balance, and the community’s voice has never mattered more.
