The Havering Daily has reviewed data that reveals which are our borough’s most troublesome junctions.

The Havering Daily looked at a variety of data and reports which highlighted several junctions in Havering that have been identified as particularly hazardous due to high numbers of personal injury accidents (PIAs). Here’s an overview of the most dangerous junctions in the area starting with Gallows Corner.

1. Gallows Corner, Romford

Gallows Corner is a major road junction in Romford, that connects the A12 Eastern Avenue, A127 Southend Arterial Road, and Main Road. It was built as a temporary flyover and also features the borough’s largest roundabout with five exits. Figures have revealed that this junction has an above-average number of collisions. This has now prompted Transport for London (TfL) to carry out safety improvements, that include changes to the actual roundabout layout and extended reduced speed limits on approaches. The work is currently underway to make improvements to the whole junction, with expectations of a total closure from June to September for the work to be completed.

2. Havering Road (Kiln Wood Lane to Collier Row Lane)

Havering Road in Collier Row has recorded 30 accidents over a five-year period ending 30 June 2022. Havering Road runs between Kiln Wood to Collier Row Lane.

The accidents include:

  • 1 fatality
  • 6 serious injuries
  • 2 pedestrian-involved accidents
  • 12 accidents during hours of darkness

Speeding has been identified as a contributing factor in several of these incidents. In response, safety improvement proposals have been developed, considering site conditions and recorded personal injury collisions.

3. Mawney Road (A12 Eastern Avenue West to St Edwards Way)

Mawney Road that runs between Romford and Collier Row, has also been the focus of safety concerns due to 16 personal injury accidents recorded along the stretch between A12 Eastern Avenue West and St Edwards Way. The incidents included:

  • 1 serious injury
  • 3 pedestrian-involved accidents
  • 4 accidents in wet conditions
  • 5 accidents during hours of darkness

Mawney Road has regularly recorded vehicle speeds of up to 50 mph. This prompted a feasibility study to proposed safety improvements to address these issues.

4. A1306 (Rainham)

The A1306 in Rainham has been identified as a hazardous location. This road is often highlighted by local residents as a dangerous, with the bend near Rainham seeing the most amount of collisions. In March this year, safety measures were approved to address these concerns, looking to reduce the number of accidents on this road.
