Havering Road Repairs Funds Must Be Spent.
Mark Whiley Green Party Co-ordinator today writes:
Havering has been allocated £1.082m, the fifth largest sum for a London borough, to fix the state of our roads. This is great news for all road users, with smoother journeys, less risk of damaging vehicles, and better fuel efficiency – less fuel consumption which means less emissions.
The catch to all this is that a quarter of these funds will be withheld if certain government criteria are not met, and to meet the first of these criteria they haven’t got long!
By 30 June 2025, the council must publish reports on its website detailing how much they are spending, how many potholes they have filled, what percentage of their roads are in what condition, and how they are minimising disruption from roadworks.
They must also show how they are spending more on preventative maintenance and particularly over the wetter winter months, as we see increasingly extreme weather events and conditions.
It’s been a good start. Councillors have been asked to identify the top three roads in their wards that need repair. If you haven’t heard from yours yet, find and email them here.
I urge all councillors to get on top of this, making the lives of council staff easier, so that we can get the borough’s roads in a better condition. I’ll be continuing to report those that I find myself and that residents alert me to around Gidea Park and Ardleigh Green.
