A recent poll run by The Havering Daily on Facebook revealed a powerful local sentiment — over 1,500 residents voted in favour of Havering leaving Greater London and returning to Essex.

The movement, known as “Hexit” (short for Havering Exit), has gained steady traction over the years. Now, it’s taken a sharp turn into the mainstream with renewed debate and a surge of public support. What began as a nostalgic call for Havering to reclaim its Essex identity has now become a powerful protest against how local governance is run under City Hall.

Many residents say they fear that Havering could be merged with other East London boroughs, further eroding its unique identity and control over local matters. These concerns have added fresh urgency to the Hexit conversation, as people worry about losing the ability to make decisions that reflect the character and needs of Havering’s communities.

Romford MP Andrew Rosindell has taken the lead on this campaign and recently raised the issue in the House of Commons, advocating for Havering to break away from Greater London’s control.

Mr Rosindell told The Havering Daily: “This poll sends a strong and clear message — the people of Havering do not feel represented by the Mayor of London. They want a return to our Essex roots, where local people have a greater say in how their communities are run. “

With fears around council mergers and dissatisfaction with the current governance under the London Mayor, the Hexit debate shows no signs of slowing down.

As one local resident commented under the poll: “We were Essex, we still feel like Essex, and we should go back to Essex.”

The debate will continue, but one thing is clear — more and more people in Havering are ready to reclaim their past to take control of their future.

Mr Rosindell added: “It is encouraging to see that 68% of Havering Daily Readers agree that Havering should be independent of Greater London. I have lived in Romford my entire life and I care deeply about our “town and country” borough, so I understand and agree with the concerns that so many people have about our borough being stuck under the control of “City Hall” and the Mayor of London.  Like the Havering Daily Poll demonstrates, they, like me, want change.
