Rainham’s Much Loved Councillor Becomes Havering’s New Mayor Vowing To Be The ‘People’s Mayor’.

Havering has a new Mayor, and trainee reporter Mia Gallagher went along to meet her.

Much loved Councillor Sue Ospreay has been appointed as the new Mayor of Havering for the 2025-2026 year. As a representative for Rainham and Wennington, her community efforts showcase her hard work and one thing is for sure, Rainham and Havering will be proud to have Councillor Sue as our new Mayor!

Councillor Sue Ospreay, a member of the Havering Residents ‘Association had served as Deputy Mayor under Gerry O’Sullivan. last year. This marks a significant moment in her career, that began when she was first elected in 2022.

Known for her hands on approach to public service, she has been deeply involved in local issues, across in Rainham and Wennington. Whether it is organising community mornings, supporting local charities, or participating in clean up campaigns, Councillor Ospreay’s presence has always been felt across the borough.

With her passion for making Rainham and Havering a place to be proud of, she plans to champion several community issues, including her longstanding campaign to tackle environmental issues at Launders Lane. Councillor Ospreay is a highly active member in her ward, not just as a councillor, but as a person who is proud to be a Rainham resident. She was recently involved in the ‘King Of The Bin Rubbish Lee’ clean up Campaign and her call on locals to volunteer to patrol Rainham to keep community safe.

 Councillor Ospreay told the Havering Daily: “I consider being elected as Mayor a great honour and I will prove my worth to the community and make them proud of me.

“I am a good people’s person and that will be the the skill I bring to this role.”

 As Mayor, her chosen charity will be the MCA Trust, for the year. One that Sue has worked with for many years and helped fund raise for. It is a charity that provides essential support with children diagnosed with all forms on cancer.

 Looking ahead, Councillor Ospreay has clear vision for Havering’s future. As Mayor, she plans to work tirelessly to improve local services, promote civic engagement and ensure that matters of concern are debated in council meetings with all residents’ voices being heard. 

Her passion for Rainham and Wennington will guide her during her term in office. Each year, the Mayor of Havering attends around 600 events, from school visits and community celebrations to high-profile civic occasions, embodying the spirit of public service and community unity.

Councillor Ospreay’s enthusiasm for her community and her aim to make a difference are what made her the ideal candidate for mayor. Her dedication to serving the people of Havering, will ensure that the borough continues to thrive throughout her term. 

Anyone who has worked with Councillor Ospreay, knows only too well how dedicated and supportive she is, actually she is one of the first people in line to help anyone in need. This role will give her the fantastic opportunity to be ‘the people’s Mayor ‘ and she is certainly set to make a significant impact as the new mayor of Havering.
