Friendship Benches Installed Across Hylands Park As Dedicated Spaces For Young People.
Hylands Tennis Club is delighted to announce the launch of its Friendship Benches project, made possible by a Jack Petchey Foundation Leader Award presented to Giorgio Bugnatelli, club administrator and secretary to the Trustees.
Giorgio chose to dedicate his £1,000 award to fund this project, in collaboration with young club members, coaches, and Hornchurch High School.
The decision to pursue this project was informed by feedback from a sample of young members, who shared their insights on how the Friendship Benches could enhance their experience at the club and foster a stronger sense of community. Their input was instrumental in shaping the idea. Additionally, club coaches were involved in discussions to ensure the project aligned with the club’s goals and values. Input was also sought from the school business manager, Emma Wylde and head teacher, Serena Madhvani, as Hylands premises are located within the school grounds, and their support has been invaluable in ensuring the feasibility and practicality of this initiative.
Giorgio Bugnatelli said:“The installation of Friendship Benches at Hylands will provide significant benefits to the young people in our organisation. These benches will serve as dedicated spaces where young people can connect, fostering a sense of community and inclusivity. By offering a non-verbal way to signal the need for companionship, the benches will help combat feelings of loneliness and isolation, which are common challenges among young people.
Additionally, the benches will encourage empathy and social responsibility among peers, as they prompt others to recognize and respond to the needs of those seated. This interaction not only builds friendships but also cultivates essential life skills such as kindness, understanding, and leadership. Overall, this initiative aligns with our goal of creating a supportive environment where all young people feel valued and included. We are grateful for the support of the Jack Petchey Foundation and look forward to seeing the positive impact of this project on our community.”
