Recent months have seen a stepping up in the number of initiatives from Dagenham and Rainham MP, Margaret Mullane to tackle a range of crimes across the constituency.

The local MP has been working with the police to bring about arrests and seizures of stolen tradespeople’s tools, to greater police presence around the transport hubs with a particular focus on Heathway and Elm Park stations and action at the shoplifting hotspots. She is also focusing on people breaking the law by pushing through ticket barriers at local stations without paying their fares.

Margaret told the Havering Daily: “I listen closely to residents who rightly tell me they are fed up with the street crime and other offences that have gone on for too long.

I heard from the tradespeople who were suffering from having their work tools stolen from their vans. I spoke with shop staff and their managers in Elm Park who have faced threats of violence from organised gangs of shoplifters. This was followed up with a meeting with police and managers to put in place actions to deter the criminals.

I have seen the damage that this does to local communities and businesses. So rather than just standing back and saying how awful things are, I have stepped up with local police officers and have taken action in Parliament.

I am cosponsoring a Bill in Parliament to toughen sentences on tool thefts and worked with the police to help bring about seizures of stolen tools valued at £50,000 at a car boot sale at Willow Farm where arrests were made.”

Margaret added “Commuters using District Line stations are angry about fare dodgers bursting through the barriers, so I have taken this to Transport for London and the Mayor for action to catch and deter this law breaking.

Local residents joined with me and Met police officers who had set up an information stall at the Rainham Tesco store to provide advice to shoppers on personal theft prevention and to raise awareness of stalking and countering violence against women and girls.

I will always support the police and authorities in doing their work to keep us safe, but we all need to play our part as well in being vigilant in reporting crime. I am pleased to see that the Government is placing emphasis on strengthening neighbourhood policing levels, this is badly needed. I am also glad that the Mayor is now strengthening the team of inspectors and inspectors to clamp down on these aggressive fare dodgers.
