Thousands Celebrate VE Day at Hylands Park with Community Fun Day
Hylands Park in Hornchurch came alive on Sunday 11th May as over 1,500 residents turned out to enjoy a Community Fun Day commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day, organised by the Hornchurch Residents’ Association.
Sponsored by the Hornchurch Residents’ Association and led by the local HRA ward team, including Councillor Christine Smith and community advocate Ciaran White, the event ran from 12pm to 4pm and drew in a steady stream of families, veterans, and local residents throughout the afternoon.
Attendees were treated to a packed afternoon of entertainment, including music, inflatables, a kids’ entertainer, VE Day-themed crafts, a fun quiz, and even rock ‘n’ roll bingo. A range of food stalls and a licensed bar kept everyone refreshed, while children delighted in waving Union Jack flags and getting stuck into the hands-on activities.

“It was wonderful to see so many people of all ages coming together to mark this important anniversary,” said Councillor Christine Smith. “Events like these help foster pride and a real sense of community — Hylands Park was filled with joy today.”
The day was a celebration of both remembrance and community spirit, paying tribute to those who served in World War II and marking eight decades since Victory in Europe.
“VE Day is a chance for us to reflect on the sacrifices made and the peace secured by a generation of brave individuals,” added Ciaran White. “It’s so important we continue to recognise and honour this history, especially with younger generations.”
The Hornchurch Residents’ Association thanked all those who attended and supported the day, and said they were proud to bring such a meaningful event to the community.
