A shameful act of vandalism turned into a moment of community pride thanks to the selfless actions of a local hero.

On Monday 6 May, Rainham Councillor Sue Ospreay visited the Rainham War Memorial ahead of this year’s VE Day celebrations, only to be met with a heartbreaking sight — the display carving of a soldier had been vandalised and broken.

Sue expressed her anger and dismay at what had happened. “This is a horrid act of vandalism and complete and utter disrespect shown towards our veterans and all those who gave their life for us,” she told The Havering Daily.

But from this senseless damage came a truly heartwarming act of kindness. Local firefighter Edd, after seeing Sue’s video on social media via The Havering Daily, reached out to offer his help. Without hesitation, he promised to repair the broken soldier statue — and he delivered far more than expected.

Not only did Edd restore the original piece, but he also went above and beyond by crafting an entirely new carved soldier to stand proudly alongside the first. His dedication and craftsmanship were matched by his generosity, using wood partly donated by a local wood shop and funding the rest himself.

“I had a family member who flew a Spitfire,” Edd told The Havering Daily. “It is important to be patriotic. I was more than happy to step in and support Sue and the local community — especially for VE Day.”

Councillor Sue Ospreay was overjoyed with the results, praising Edd’s community spirit and swift action. Thanks to him, Rainham’s War Memorial now features two standing soldier carvings, restored and ready in time for the VE Day commemorations — a testament not only to the bravery of our past heroes but also to the kindness and courage that still exists within our local community today.
