A powerful new campaign has launched to support Met firearms officers following the shocking decision to force NX121 into a gross misconduct hearing — despite being fully acquitted by a jury in record time. The Public Safety Foundation is raising funds to buy every Met firearms officer a cup of coffee — a small gesture with a big message: You are not alone. Read more on how morale has hit rock bottom, why senior leadership is being criticised, and why many now say enough is enough.

A new initiative called Operation Coffee Break has been launched in a bid to boost the morale of firearms officers across the Metropolitan Police following the controversial treatment of officer NX121, who was cleared of murder last year. The campaign, led by the Public Safety Foundation, aims to raise funds to buy every serving Met firearms officer a cup of coffee — a small but powerful gesture of support during what many are calling one of the most demoralising periods in recent policing history.

The officer known publicly as NX121 was acquitted in record time by a unanimous jury, who are believed to have questioned why the case had even gone to trial. Despite this, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has now directed the Metropolitan Police to proceed with a gross misconduct hearing — a decision that has stunned many and triggered a wave of concern from both serving officers and the public.

Oliver Laurence, Managing Director of the Public Safety Foundation, told the Havering Daily:
“This initiative is a way to help raise morale for our firearms officers across London who not only are demoralised but feel completely unsupported by their own senior leaders. NX121 was subjected to an investigation and faced a jury. He was cleared. Now all his colleagues are asking themselves just why they are doing this voluntary role.”

The campaign comes amid growing concerns over police morale, especially among specialist officers who take on the high-risk responsibilities of armed response units. With violent crime — particularly involving knives and firearms — rising across the capital, many now worry about the long-term impact of losing experienced officers due to dwindling support and increasing scrutiny.

“We know there are problems of violence, gun and knife crime within certain communities,” Mr Laurence continued. “We see the difficulties Londoners face every day and those dying on our streets. We saw with the horrendous death of Andrew Harper how a vehicle can be used as a weapon, and this is happening more and more across the country.”

The campaign also highlights the frustration many feel over the lack of visible backing from senior Met leaders.
“We have been very disappointed by the Senior Leadership at the Met for their lack of support towards their officers and the Met Federation. This is why we have launched this initiative — to help improve officers’ morale and show them that actually, there are many across London who do support them.”

In a bold move, Mr Laurence has written to the Cabinet Office requesting that NX121 be awarded a medal for gallantry for his bravery.
“Ultimately, people need to realise that if you play stupid games, things happen as a result. No firearms officer wants to go out on a job and have to pull that trigger,” he said.

London’s armed officers remain among the most restrained in Europe when it comes to discharging firearms — despite the capital facing some of the highest levels of urban violence. Yet, for many frontline officers, the threat of losing their career, their freedom, or their mental health due to bureaucratic backlash is now more real than ever.

Operation Coffee Break is more than a morale-boosting campaign — it’s a statement of solidarity from the public to those who stand between chaos and calm on the streets of London.
