Large Web Making Caterpillars Back Across Havering.
Havering has seen numerous trees and bushes covered with what appears to be webbing spun across the branches. Residents in some parts of the borough, like Rainham have reported trees and bushes covered across large parts with these webings, that frequently resemble spooky Halloween scenes.
However, the cause is entirely natural – a seasonal appearance of Small Ermine moth caterpillars. These harmless larvae spin large communal webs to protect themselves from predators. While their presence might look alarming, they are not dangerous and pose no lasting threat to the plants they cover.

The caterpillars will eventually pupate and leave the plants, with the webs naturally breaking down. Although they can temporarily strip a shrub of leaves, the affected bushes typically recover fully.
Carol and Rob, two Rainham residents spotted the bushes yesterday whilst out on a litter pick.
