‘IOPC Are Not Fit For Purpose’-Slams Ex Cop As Met Forced To Pursue Officer NX121 Despite Jury Acquittal.
‘This is a thoroughly disgusting and scandalous decision that highlights the most important factor — the IOPC are not fit for purpose and their decision in taking so long shows this.’
A former Metropolitan Police officer has launched a scathing attack on the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) after its decision to force the Met to hold a gross misconduct hearing for officer NX121 — despite the officer being unanimously acquitted of murder by a jury last year.
The IOPC, which oversees complaints and conduct within police forces across England and Wales, has directed the Met to proceed with a disciplinary process against the firearms officer, who was found not guilty in under three hours by a jury believed to be dismayed the case even reached court.
Speaking to the Havering Daily, Former Met Officer Graham Wettone expressed his outrage:
“I don’t think I’m shocked at the decision, what I am completely appalled at is the length of time it has taken them to come up with this decision. They are not fit for purpose and this decision shows that clearly. This also shows that they clearly find a way to justify their existence and want a second bite of the cherry.”
“This decision could have been made months ago. But instead they chose to wait this long and now come out and force the Met — which is what they are practically doing — to hold a misconduct hearing against the officer who could potentially lose his job on the balance of probability after a jury completely acquitted him in record-breaking time. It is a truly appalling decision.”
“NX121’s actions were found lawful, legal and fully justified and yet they want their bite of the cherry at the expense of this officer. This will now put more strain on the officer and his family that have already been through so much. It will also have huge repercussions on police officers right across the country.”
“Being a firearms officer is a voluntary role. They are highly trained individuals. A decision like this ultimately will impact all of society as we will lose such experienced officers. This is a decision that will reverberate right across the country and have lasting impacts on all police forces. I applaud the Met for supporting their officer as they rightly should. This is a thoroughly disgusting and scandalous decision that highlights the most important factor — the IOPC are not fit for purpose and their decision in taking so long shows this.”
This is a decision that will once again cause controversy and once again highlight policing for all the wrong reasons. For the record, NX121 was fully acquitted of murder and his actions were found to be lawful and legal.
