Dagenham And Rainham MP Steps In To Raise Awareness Of PTSD In Bluelight Workers.
Members of the PTSD999 charity reached out to the Dagenham and Rainham Member of Parliament, Margaret Mullane, in efforts to raise awareness of the issue of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder suffered by police officers, fire fighters, prison officers and others in the emergency services.
A meeting was held in Westminster with Gary Hayes one of the co-founders of PTSD999, in which he recounted the traumas experienced by so many. During the past year there had been 12 cases of suicide of former police officers and also other emergency services that had been attributed to PTSD.
Margaret told the Havering Daiily: “Some of the experiences and tragedies that people who are employed to safeguard us are unbelievably traumatic and can result in long term problems for those brave men and women.
I am determined to raise awareness of this issue and believe that the induction and inservice training for police, fire service and other emergency services staff should deal with the issue of PTSD.”
Gary Hayes from PTSD 999 told the Havering Daily: “It was great to meet members of Margaret’s team and to have the opportunity to share the reality of mental health issues that have blighted emergency service workers for years now. They frequently get very little support and the challenges they face are never ending.
“I am grateful to Margaret for her support in raising awareness of this vital issue.”
