Rainham Police Officers Set Up Stalking Awareness Stall To Provide Important Information For The Community.
Rainham police officers set up an information stall at Rainham Tesco on Saturday 26 April, to provide literature and advice to shoppers regarding National Stalking Awareness Week. The stall was organised by the fantastic local action team run by Sergeant Basit and PCSOs Bates, Sims and was a great success with excellent community engagement.
As well as information regarding stalking and Violence Against Women and Girls, officers also had literature regarding theft prevention, and items such as pouches for contactless car keys.
Rainham community activist Sue Watson, who works closely with the police on the Independent Advisory Group, was there to speak to residents about the importance of speaking out on stalking. Sue told the Havering Daily: “Stalking is a pattern of repeated, unwanted behaviour that causes you to feel distressed or scared. It can be perpetrated by men or women. The point of National Stalking Awareness week is to encourage people to report problematic behaviour before it gets to a crisis point. Left unchecked, offending behaviour can escalate and real harm can occur.”

Beam Park Councillor Matt Stanton also attended the event, and told the Havering Daily: “It’s great to see so many people engaging with the police on this subject, as it often goes under the radar or gets dismissed. No one should suffer in silence if they are being stalked”.
Dagenham and Rainham MP, Margaret Mullane, was also in attendance and thanked officers for their action in raising awareness as well as the work they do in the community.

The National Stalking Helpline can be contacted on 0808 802 0300 for confidential advice. Stalking is a crime and should be reported via 101 or met.police.uk/report.
