Romford crime rates remain above national average, data reveals

Romford continues to experience higher-than-average crime levels, with vehicle crime, robbery, and anti-social behaviour ranking among the area’s most pressing issues, according to new figures.

Recent statistics published by Plumplot reveal that Romford’s overall crime rate stands at 122.2 crimes per 1,000 people – significantly above the national average. Violent crime remains a concern, accounting for 29.4% of all reported offences in the area. A total of 16,600 violent crimes were recorded over the past year, although this represents a 10.3% decrease from the previous year.

Vehicle crime is particularly notable, with Romford ranking third out of 99 UK postcode areas. Despite a 16.5% year-on-year drop, the rate of vehicle crime remains more than double the national average, at 12.7 crimes per 1,000 residents.

Shoplifting has also seen a sharp rise, with incidents increasing by 23.8%. Romford now ranks 11th nationally for this type of crime, which makes up 9.5% of all offences reported in the area.

Anti-social behaviour remains a significant concern, accounting for 16.6% of all reported crime. Romford ranks 24th nationally in this category, and incidents have risen by 3% in the past 12 months.

Robbery rates remain alarmingly high, placing Romford 12th nationally. While the number of reported robberies has dropped slightly by 5.5%, the rate is still more than double the UK average.

With ongoing concerns across multiple categories, residents and authorities alike are calling for targeted policing and increased community engagement to bring the borough’s crime levels down.
