Heaton Councillors Call For Action On Briar Road Estate Fly-tipping.
Heaton Ward Councillors accompanied officers from Havering Council on a walk around the Briar Road estate last Monday 14 April in their ongoing effort to deal with fly-tipping on the estate.
The councillors were joined by officers from the Enforcement, Estates, and Refuse teams, visiting hot-spots and discussing what more the Council can do to deal with the problem.
Since the meeting, officers have confirmed to the Councillors that investigations have been started against 6 people as a result of information found in the fly-tips.
“We know that people want to be able to walk out of their front door and not be confronted by the rubbish of people too lazy to do things properly,” said Cllr Frankie Walker “the vast majority of our residents do dispose of their waste correctly and rightly feel aggrieved that others are making the choice not to.”
Labour Group Leader Councillor Keith Darvill understands the importance of resident involvement in dealing with the issue, “our hardworking council officers can’t be everywhere at once, so when residents proactively report fly-tipping, or overflowing bins, that helps the Council respond to the issue much more quickly.”
Councillor Mandy Anderson has been involved with the Harold Hill Wombles group for many years, she said:”Ultimately, the Council, or well-meaning residents, picking up litter or dealing with fly-tips, is a sticking plaster. What’s needed is for people to be more mindful of how they dispose of their rubbish, whether it’s taking it home and binning it, or making sure that they use a licensed waste carrier to dispose of bigger items.”
Officers are exploring whether more litter bins can be placed across the estate, and there will be increased patrols by the Council’s enforcement team in the area. The Councillors will be working with local shopkeepers and residents groups to communicate with residents on the issue.
