Why Is There No Public Outcry Over The Dissipation Of The Met Police?-The Silence From Those In Power Is Deafening.
We are witnessing the dismantling of our police forces in real time—yet the silence from those in power is deafening.
Across London and beyond, we’re hearing the same story play out: cuts to our police forces, slashes to officer numbers, and an overwhelming sense that the protection of the public is no longer a priority. The Metropolitan Police Service—one of the world’s most recognised forces—is facing a £260 million black hole in its budget. The result? A shocking reduction of 1,700 officers at a time when crime is spiralling.
Most concerning of all is the loss of 371 Safer Schools officers. These officers served as a vital line between schools and community policing, a deterrent against rising youth crime. Now, they’re gone. And what’s been left in their place? A dangerous vacuum—and the continued rise of knife crime, youth violence, burglaries, and serious assaults.
And yet—where is the outrage?
Local councillors are informed. Members of Parliament are briefed. Tri-borough police leadership teams keep them updated on the grim challenges that officers face daily. But instead of rallying to support our force, instead of lobbying government, instead of raising their voices, they stay eerily silent.
“You cannot police a population of nearly 9 million people with just over 34,000 officers.”
That’s not a sustainable ratio. That’s a crisis waiting to explode.
Let’s be clear: these cuts are not faceless statistics. They are the loss of officers on the beat. They are the disappearance of dedicated teams that once patrolled our streets, schools, and parks. They are the loss of presence, of deterrence, of support—and most importantly, of safety.
What’s worse is the double standard. When something goes wrong—when a story hits the headlines—those very same silent councillors and MPs are the first to condemn the police, the first to speak out. But when officers are overworked, underfunded, and still delivering brave, commendable work on our streets, where is the praise? Where is the support?
We must stop treating our police force as expendable. The silence from those who should be leading the call for change in funding, is unacceptable. It’s time to demand better—for our police officers, and for the communities they serve.
Silence speaks volumes. And right now, it’s deafening.
