Where We live-Havering Joins Together For A Spring Clean.
Havering Council joined Romford Town Wombles and volunteers last Saturday, for a big clean up event as part of the council’s flagship campaign Where We Live and Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean.
Armed with litter picks, bags and spades, the enthusiastic volunteers made their way in and around Romford town centre to help pick up discarded litter and tidy up.
Leader of Council, Councillor Ray Morgon, Deputy Leader Councillor Gillian Ford, cabinet members and ward councillors from across the borough, joined volunteers who were split into three groups to tackle different areas.
Over 50 bags of rubbish were collected on the day.
Refreshments were laid on for the hard-working volunteers, courtesy of Marlborough Highways, who repair and improve the borough’s roads on behalf of the Council and there was also support from Romford BID.
Councillor Ray Morgon, Leader of Havering Council, said:
“There was a real community spirit and everyone got stuck in to help tidy up the town centre and the areas around it.
“As part of our Where we Live campaign, we want to encourage our residents to have pride in where they live, work and go to school.
“Everyone out there on Saturday definitely had this and I applaud their enthusiasm and their hard work in helping us to keep the borough cleaner and tidier.
“Here at the Council, we do our bit as well in cleaning streets, clearing fly tipping and litter.
“Yet what we saw on Saturday, was that unfortunately, there are those who think it is ok to drop their litter on the ground instead of putting it in a bin or taking it home with them.
“We can all play a part in helping to keep where we live clean, tidy, green and a great place to be.”
Rob Enifer, from the Romford Town Wombles, said:
“’On behalf of the Romford Town Wombles, we were delighted to see so many join our Keep Britain Tidy ‘Great British Spring Clean event’ last Saturday.
“The day was a great success and our volunteers showed fantastic community spirit, helping to improve the environment in our town.
“We hold regular monthly group events in and around Romford and we would be really pleased to hear from anyone who might wish to come and join us.”
