Policing-The Numbers Game And How There Are No Numbers Left……….
Before we point the finger the at political interference that has repeatedly decimated our police forces and their numbers, let us just start by saying what a remarkable job those on the frontline do everyday with what little they have.
Policing has become over the years a political tennis match. One party serves and then the opposition comes back with a cracking backhand to take the point. Guess who the Slazenger ball has been? Our police forces, continuously used as a tool to score points.
Brutally smashed by a Conservative Home Secretary, who then went on to become Prime Minister and continue the demolition job. She was told by the police federation that these horrendous cuts would of course have consequences and of which she pointed the finger back and told them to stop crying wolf. Bear in mind these were the officers that were regularly rushing her to safety, covering her in case of an attack. Its a wonder how they did their job with the endless knives they had been thrown at their backs.
We are now at the stage that policing has been left in tatters and is a numbers game, with the saddest fact that there are no numbers.
A horrendous incident in Elm Park that hit mainstream media two weeks ago, highlighted the fact that policing does not have the numbers it needs. Between 50-60 youths rampaged the quiet streets of Elm Park, as officers arrived within four minutes. But how many officers? The answer is four. Four to deal with over 50 plus youths some armed with machetes and knives. Those officers did an incredible job dealing with the incident to the best of their ability. But sadly they do not have the capability to magically produce more officers on the street.
We know forces are now facing more cuts to an already shredded up service. Complaints of police not coming out to answer calls and such, when in reality we should be thanking those we have left, instead of knocking them.
Officers are hoarse of telling people that these cuts will indeed have consequences and here we are…Cuts have had consequences and our numbers are not enough, nowhere near enough.
Policing will continue to be used as a political tool to score points from. Officers will be at the sharp end of that having to deal with gradually deteriorating situations and circumstances in our communities.
There are no winners here, not our police officers and not our communities.
Forces need to be funded properly and be to function as they so desperately need.
