This week Margaret Mullane MP launched a campaign petition in a bid to secure the £35 million capital investment Queen’s Hospital needs to expand the Emergency Department (A&E), boosting capacity and bringing down waiting times. The investment will also secure a PET scanner for the hospital which will reduce cancer diagnosis waiting times across Barking and Dagenham, Havering, and Redbridge.

The Dagenham and Rainham Labour MP told the Havering Daily: “I have been working to improve services at Queen’s Hospital since the moment I was elected last July. I’ve visited, spoken with the senior leadership, and I have had private conversations with Ministers to try and secure the investment our hospital needs. The situation, however, is that Labour inherited a mess when we took office.

“Let’s be clear. The NHS across Britain is on its knees after 14 years of neglect under a government that wanted to sell off the family silver. Because of this I know the task is great, and that there will be other areas in desperate need. However, it was one of my election pledges to bring down waiting times at Queen’s Hospital and that is what I intend to do.

“The goal of my campaign is to highlight both the significant issues facing Queen’s Hospital and to show the strength of feeling on this issue in the community. If we have enough voices, I will ensure that our hospital is on the radar when government funding becomes available.”

A recent Care Quality Commission report into GP services highlighted that Barking and Dagenham has the worst provision in the whole of the UK. This, coupled with the capacity issues at Queen’s Hospital, means that local people have limited access to NHS services and are not receiving the good quality healthcare they deserve.

Margaret concluded: “Queen’s Hospital was designed to see 300 patients a day, it currently sees an average of 750. This campaign couldn’t be more important. I’m urging residents to sign my petition and help me secure the £35m capital funding that Queen’s Hospital needs to expand the Emergency Department.”
