Who we are, why we are: more than a festival!
The East London LGBTQ+ Film Festival is a film festival created by Kaleidoscope to showcase sensational independent and studio cinema, made for and by members of the LGBTQIA+ Community. This festival hopes to inspire queer youth, create a safe space for queer people to foster community, and raise important funds for the charitable organisation Kaleidoscope.
Kaleidoscope is a Romford-based LGBTQ+ charity founded in 2022 by festival directors Carrie Kendall & Natalie Keeling, who had grown tired of not having an LGBTQ+ scene in Romford and felt that support & advice just wasn’t available for those in need. Carrie & Natalie have
since been working tirelessly to create vital safe spaces for queer youth to socialize, be creative & seek support, all without judgement or fear.
Kaleidoscope has hosted everything from film nights to pride celebrations, and the social group has a monthly meet up for 17s – 24s at Lumiere in Romford.
A note from the director:
Festival director Carrie Kendall says “Havering doesn’t have any safe spaces or designated events for the LGBTQ+ community, and that has to change. People are forced to travel into central London to meet others and experience these kinds of safe spaces. Being on the edge of London puts us in a weird place because it often gets forgotten about. This film festival aims to champion independent cinema, while bringing together the local Queer community.”
