Conservative Councillor And Labour MP Unite Against Horrendous Rent Increase On Rainham Bowls Club.
Rainham Conservative Ward Councillor Jackie McArdle and the Labour Member of Parliament for Dagenham and Rainham Margaret Mullane, have once again joined the two parties to fight another attack on vital local resources from the Havering Residents Association.
Just two weeks after a joint battle to save three local libraries another battle is underway to save Havering’s Bowls Clubs.
An emergency meeting was held on Friday between the Committee at Rainham Bowls and club members to try and find a way forward.
After leases were left unrenewed for several years, the Council wanted to increase the clubs ground rent and green maintenance from 10k to 30k. The club and the council agreed on the club being responsible for their own green keeping at a rough cost of 10k per club alongside a peppercorn rent.
This has been agreed but left unsigned for nearly a year, then came the killer blow of also wanting 7k per year rent plus paying their own water bills pushing the yearly cost with electricity bills to over 20k.
This would be the final nail in the bowls club coffin!
The club is trying everything it can to raise funds and gain new membership, from table top sales, functions and the Havering local lottery, but the fear is that when this all comes into force in January 26 unless this is drastically reduced, the club will close in its 50th year anniversary.
We urge all clubs in Havering to muster the support of your local MP’s Andrew Rosindell and Julia Lopez alongside ward councillors to fight what will be the end to bowls in Havering.
In a time where we are borrowing 88m the rent from these clubs won’t even make a dent and why in a time of severe financial crisis are we spending £250,000 on bin liners for food waste and entering costly competitions like London in bloom and the green flag awards!
Havering’s “starting well, living well and aging well” initiatives are costly millions! There is no room for fluff and cake icing now! we have to reinvest some of that money into local resources and give our residents a chance to start live and age well before it’s too late!!
