EXCLUSIVE: Romford Councillor Commits His Future To the Conservatives Following Speculation.
Councillor David Taylor has told the Havering Daily that his future is with the Conservatives, in an exclusive report, following speculation and questions.
Romford Conservatives has opened its selection process for candidates for the 2026 local elections and Councillor David Taylor has confirmed that he will be applying to stand again as a Conservative. Taylor was first elected as a Conservatives Councillor in 2022, securing the second highest vote in the newly created St Edward’s ward.
He has since taken up a national role in the party, connecting local churches with policy makers, and is involved in coordinating a national councillor mentoring and training network.
Cllr Taylor issued the clarification following numerous questions from residents asking if he will stand for another party or as an independent. He said that HRA Cllrs keep suggesting he cross the floor and join them.
David told the Havering Daily:
“I keep being asked if I’d switch party, or stand as an independent. I’m flattered by the rumours, and that many in the HRA think I am an effective Councillor, but I’m a Conservative and remain committed to the party.
My goal has never been “power by any means”, nor has it been a political career. My goal has been to serve my residents to the best of my ability.
Having seen Havering politics over the last 3 years, and seen how it all operates, I am confident that it is only local Conservatives who offer what the borough needs.
As a Conservative I believe in small government, which gets out of people’s way and spends their taxes more efficiently. I’ve watched as the HRA have wasted millions and made damaging decisions. It was only my Conservatives colleagues who stood up against that”.
Cllr Taylor continued:
“I see no reason why the local Conservatives would not select me as a candidate, as I’ve been an effective member of the team. I’ve worked closely with all Conservatives Councillors, as well as our Member of Parliament Andrew Rosindell.
However, I don’t take selection for granted and I respect the process of democracy. I’ll make my case, and I’ll respect the outcome.
Whatever their decision, I remain a committed member of the party, involved locally and nationally, and I shall continue to play my part.
I’m a man of conviction, I won’t be joining another party just to stay elected.”
