Major Roadworks at Gallows Corner to Cause Significant Disruption
From Monday 10 March until mid-June, motorists using Gallows Corner junction on the A127 Southend Arterial Road and A12 Eastern Avenue should prepare for significant delays.
Temporary lane closures will reduce the roads to one lane as essential preparatory works are carried out for the replacement of the Gallows Corner flyover. This includes widening slip roads and diverting utility services to support the complete renewal and strengthening of the flyover, ensuring it remains reliable for decades to come.
During this period, all routes, including the flyover, will remain open, but approach roads and local streets are expected to be heavily congested. Transport for London (TfL) advises travellers to avoid the area during peak hours or to travel before 07:30 or after 19:00 when disruption may be less severe. Temporary footway diversions will also be in place to accommodate pedestrians.
Overnight directional closures will occur at various points throughout the works, starting at 21:00 on Monday 10 March, to install traffic management systems. Local diversions will be clearly signposted.
A second phase of the project will begin from mid-June and last until September, during which time the entire Gallows Corner junction, including the flyover, will be closed to all traffic except emergency vehicles and buses. Local diversion routes and temporary footway diversions will continue during this period.
TfL expects this project to significantly impact travel across Havering and surrounding areas, urging residents to plan their journeys in advance and allow extra travel time. Commuters are encouraged to stay informed by checking live updates and travel advice from TfL.
