Dagenham And Rainham MP Supports Calls For Funding Boost For GP Surgeries.

The Member of Parliament for Dagenham and Rainham- Margaret Mullane, has co-signed a letter alongside parliamentary colleagues calling on the Health Secretary to increase support for the primary care sector. 

The letter, signed by Labour MPs and others, calls on the Government to cement primary care’s role in planning and designing healthcare delivery. 

Data from Lord Darzi’s Independent Investigation of the National Health Service in England, reveals a decline in primary care funding over the past two decades. Between 2006 and 2022, primary care’s share of the NHS budget decreased from 27% to 18%, while the proportion spent on hospitals increased from 47% to 58% during the same timeframe.

Margaret told the Havering Daily: “I have raised the issue of the disruption to services at Rainham Health Centre and Five Elms with the current provider soon to end their services. This is something I will be taking up in my meeting with the Chair and Chief Executive of the NHS North East London Integrated Care Board.

Surgeries and health centres in Dagenham and Rainham have a pivotal role in promoting the health of my constituents, including helping individuals with the prevention and treatment of common illnesses so this news is particularly disturbing. We need to rebalance investment towards our community services, which lie at the centre of the Government’s mission to expand elective capacity and reduce waiting list backlogs.
