The Need For More Police Officers On Our Streets Is Beyond Critical Point.
“The warning lights are flashing across our police force, and today, Labour have failed to stump up the funding needed to stop massive cuts to frontline services,” Chris Philp MP, Shadow Home Secretary, said:
Knife crime is at the highest it has been for five years, violent crime is on the increase across London, yet the Met Police will have to axe 2,300 officers and 400 staff this year due to the whopping £450 million budget shortfall. The endless policing protests in the capital including the outbreak of the Just Stop Oil floor dwellers cost the Met over £20 million. This at the time equated to 300 police officers being taken from frontline duty each day. For what?
“Our police services now face a £118 million shortfall, which puts over 1800 police jobs at risk.
“Law and Order has taken a backseat to Trade Union handouts under this Government, today’s funding settlement proves that beyond doubt. The only winners here are the criminals who can operate with increasing impunity as our police are left with huge funding shortfalls,” continues the Shadow Home Secretary.
Law and order does indeed seem to have taken a backseat when it comes to funding. Yet the need for more officers on our streets is past critical point.
Scenes of youths fighting on our streets with machetes is so norm now, people do not even stop and look. They actually walk past without batting an eyelid. This is what happens in London. For years and years, anti knife crime campaigners have begged, pleaded and hoped that someone, somewhere would intervene and actually start to work with them. Now we have a knife crime epidemic and guess what else we have? Police cuts on the way if that is even comprehensible.
Last year the Met police received a staggering 1,279,552 101 calls. They also received 988,923 digital contacts. Let us also add the 2,300 + emergency calls from 999 and what do we have? Officers out struggling to respond and doing the best that they can to get to every job coming their way fast.
Ironically enough, you would think from having read this so far that police officers would be better appreciated, yet funnily enough they are one of the most abused professions going. Be it verbal, or physical.
Yesterday, officers in Euston were praised for their bravery in rescuing members of the public from a burning building. Not their role, but they did. Sitting with those in need, waiting for social care providers, not their role but they do. The list goes on and the bravery they undertake matches that list.
For years they have faced austerity cuts from Conservative governments who equally axed officers. Now the cuts continue and London is faced with the dire, desperate need for officers on our street and instead we have cuts coming our way. You couldn’t make this up……..
