Yesterday, Wednesday 29 January saw the official opening of the Youth Unity Hub in Romford. This is an amazing safe space for our youth to visit where they can engage in endless activities such a music, podcasts, studying, mentoring and even video games.

The official opening saw many members of our community join in the festivities including our GLA Member for Havering and Redbridge Keith Prince, Havering’s Deputy Mayor Councillor Sue Ospreay. Councillors’ Barry Mugglestone, David Taylor and Jane Keane, Representatives from the Elizabeth Line, Havering Council officials including Jane Eastaff, Julie Frost from Romford BID, Romford Shopping Hall members and Steve the graffiti artist who did the incredible artwork at the hub.

Also present was bereaved mother and anti knife crime campaigner Sue Hedges from the Ricky Hayden Memorial who has worked with Shirley.

The hub is a much needed area for our youth to use and comes thanks to the incredible hard work over the years by Youth Unity founder Shirley Jackson.

Shirley told the Havering Daily:

“Yesterday saw the official launch of our new hub in Romford! Made possible through the generous support of TFL and the Havering Community Service Partnership Team, which is made possible by funding from the Violence Reduction Unit (MOPAC), this space is designed to be a safe haven for young people in our community.

At our hub, we currently offer 1:1 mentoring for young people aged 14 to 25 through referrals. Our trained professional youth workers are dedicated to creating a fun and engaging environment where young people can not only enjoy their time but also find guidance and support on important topics. Whether it’s help with education, career advice, or personal challenges, we are here to listen and assist.

However, the success of this initiative relies heavily on the support of local businesses and community members. We believe that by coming together, we can create a lasting impact and help keep young people off the streets, providing them with opportunities to thrive in a supportive environment. We invite businesses to get behind this project and join us in making a difference in the lives of our youth.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended our launch and showed their support. Together, we can empower the next generation and create a brighter future for our community.

If you’re interested in learning more about our mentoring program or how you can support our hub, please don’t hesitate to reach out.”

Well done to Shirley for her tireless dedication in helping and supporting youths not only across Havering, but across London.
