A Harold Hill woman has been living in nightmare conditions that include having her home smelling of dog urine, rats and endless flies because of her neighbour.

Tanya lives on Colne Avenue and since her neighbour arrived three years ago, has lived in appalling conditions.

“She has two dogs that never go out. They are locked in the house everyday and as a result have to use the house as a toilet,” she tells the Havering Daily.

“When she first came there was rubbish everywhere so my husband agreed to clear all the rubbish with help from his friend and to cut her grass regularly to avoid the garden becoming so horrendous again. But indoors is awful and the smell of urine seeps in through my walls and the dog faeces that is collected and put in bags stays in the garden collecting flies for months.”

The smell coming through the walls is so bad now, that Tanya and her husband can’t access their bedroom and when they do they awake with burning red eyes.

“She has a boy dog and girl dog, so when the girl dog is in season, she has to keep the two apart and one dog stays permanently locked in a room for weeks. As a result, he obviously uses that room as a toilet and the smell has become that bad now that it has come through to my walls and is also causing mould problems.

“We have also had rats due to all the rubbish. We woke up one day to the sound of scratching on the floor and saw that we had rats in the house.”

Tanya is a council tenant, but her neighbour privately rents and as such, Tanya has repeatedly contacted the owner of the property to see if he can step in.

“An inspector came and told her that she had to pull up all of her carpets and pick up all the dog faeces left on the floor and bag it. However, she does not put her rubbish out each week so it stays there for days and in Novemeber I was buying fly spray as her rubbish bags had accumulated endless flies.

“When she does put her rubbish out, she often puts it out early in the morning and the foxes come and rip the bags open leaving dog faeces down the path and stair way which is never collected.”

Tanya has lived in horrendous conditions for two years now and has appealed directly to the woman herself to clear up the mess, however nothing has been done.

“She works during the day so the dogs are left on their own and cannot go outside. I have even contacted the RSPCA to see what they can do as these dogs have not been out for two years. However they informed me that as they have food and water there is nothing they can do despite the fact that they are frequently sitting amongst their own feces and have not been for a walk in a such a long time.

“It is beyond awful how we are living. Our health is suffering, we cannot breathe properly due to how strong the urine smell is, my grandchildren do not want to come round and see as they say ‘Nannie’s house smells. It really is terrible.”

Tanya has now reached out to Councillor Paul MGeary and Jan Sargent for help. Both are working hard to see how they can resolve this situation for Tanya and her husband.
