Last Saturday, members of Romford Civic Society presented five Romford Market stall owners with certificates recognising the seasonal contribution their businesses made to the Romford Market Experience.

The judges comprised of Romford Civic Society Members (and local shoppers) Helen Cresswell and her mum Barbara Partridge, together with Romford Councillor Jane Keane and recently made, Hon. Alderman Wendy Bryce Thompson awarded framed certificates to:-

Storky                                Caron Webb

Artificial Flowers             Karen Dean

Crystal Cabinet                Beki and Nikki

The Best Plaice                Kim Crosbie

Candyfloss                        Candice

Councillor Jane Keane said: “This was a new initiative designed to recognise the contribution that individual stall holders make to the Romford Market  experience. This year was a test run, next year we will have categories so that we capture the full breadth of the retail offer on the market at Christmas time.”

Civic Society Member and local shopper Helen Cresswell said: “I shop on the market regularly. I know market stallholders work hard to attract loyal customers. It must be a tough life. We were rained off when we went to judge the competition on 7th December but many businesses set up and trade in all weathers. In our opinion all stallholders deserve a medal for that alone.”

Hon. Alderman, Wendy Bryce Thompson said: “We had fun talking to the stallholders. There were many contenders for a winners certificate. We could have given out many more.

A spokesperson for the Romford Civic Society said: “This was a fun new project for us.  Our regular members really appreciate the extra effort that stallholders make throughout the year creating a lively welcoming atmosphere on the market. That welcome is even more important at Christmas time as there is a lot of competition for shoppers from other places in Essex and London. We were genuinely touched to see how much the recognition meant to the owners.”
