Havering and all London boroughs will lose their school based officers as they are moved to join local policing teams.

The Met is facing huge financial pressures and will be down another 2300 officers next year.

Boroughs right across London are already struggling with low numbers and this blow will be another huge loss for our communities.

Havering has seen officers removed daily for London abstractions, or even abstractions to areas such as Ilford that need more resources than Havering. As a result, Havering is always on a back foot when it comes to officer numbers.

Now, all London boroughs are set to lose their school officers who have been based in schools right across the borough.

A Met spokesperson told the Havering Daily:

“As part of the commitment we made in our New Met For London Plan to have the strongest ever neighbourhood policing, we are changing the way Met works with schools to improve our presence within the community where children are most likely to become victims of crime.

“Officers will no longer be based in schools but instead join local policing teams where they will retain strong relationships with schools to ensure that incidents can be dealt with quickly. As part of a team, officers will also work with other youth based establishments to safeguard young people, prevent victimisation and reduce crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB) beyond schools.

“We know officers have a huge impact on young people and by integrating the Safer Schools Officers into local policing teams it will mean a wider pool of officers will benefit from working with young people, understanding the issues they face, and improve police encounters.”

The loss of 2300 officers to London will be another blow to the capital and the force itself during a time when London needs more officers.
