Romford Councillor David Taylor responds to the publication of the READI report last week by Havering Council.

The report, as published, is a worrying read. Staff are cited as expecting Havering to be ‘quite racist’, and they worry that the council won’t tackle racism for fear of a backlash from the community.

The publication of this report means that the public and Councillors are now able to come to their own conclusion about whether Havering Council has changed.

In their response to the press, Havering Council pulls no punches and accuses our local press of creating a “risk of inflaming tensions”. Whilst I appreciate the council’s view on protecting staff, I find that comment highly inappropriate.

We must always champion openness and transparency, no matter how uncomfortable that makes us feel.

I thank our local press for their pursuit of transparency, and the Chief Executive and Havering Council for the publication of the report.”
