Havering’s Food Waste Collection.
Terry Hughes on behalf of Havering’s Climate Coalition today writes:
We are pleased to see that Havering Council is looking into setting up a food waste collection service and we have seen that a consultation is under way.
However, we have not seen anything explaining to residents why collecting our food waste separately is such a good idea so take a look at the reasons listed below.
IT REDUCES METHANE GAS
When food waste decomposes in landfills, it produces methane, a greenhouse gas that’s more potent than carbon dioxide and poses a significant problem. Composting food waste instead prevents this.
IT SAVES MONEY
Composting food waste instead of sending it to landfills saves the cost of landfill, which can in turn lower council tax.
IT CREATES RESOURCES
Food waste can be used to generate energy or used to produce fertiliser both of which are valuable resources.
IT HELPS IDENTIFY WASTE
Using a food waste bin can help you see how much and what types of food you’re throwing away, which can help you save money on groceries.
IT KEEPS YOUR KITCHEN CLEANER
Separating food waste from other waste can help keep your kitchen bin cleaner and less smelly.
We hope you agree that this can only be a good thing and we hope you support it.
