The battle to stop prolific shoplifting across Hornchurch Town Centre took a new turn this week as a 20 year old woman and a 13 year old girl were both arrested.

The woman and the girl are believed to have stolen from Iceland’s and were then making their way through different shops in the high street when shopkeepers contacted the local ward PCSO who does an excellent job in the area. She quickly located the two suspects and called for help from her colleagues who were able to respond. One of the suspects is believed to have attempted to run off from the officers, but was arrested.

A spokesperson for the Met police told the Havering Daily:

“Police Community Support Officers were made aware of reports of shoplifting at 12:30 on Tuesday 1st October from a store in High Street, Hornchurch.

Officers attended the High Street and located two suspects in a separate store nearby and they were subsequently arrested for shoplifting and going equipped to steal.

A 20 year woman and a 13 year old girl have been charged with shoplifting and going equipped to steal and will appear at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on 29th October.”

Safer Neighbourhoods Sergeant, Amar Sehmby told the Havering Daily:

“We are working closely with retail outlets in Hornchurch and because of these relationships, we have been able to act promptly on receiving reports of shoplifting.  In this instance we were able to detain a woman and a girl and they will now be put before the courts.  We would encourage local businesses to report crime by calling 101, always dial 999 in an emergency.”
