Exclusive Interview with Paralympian Brock Whiston: Winning Gold, Silver, and Overcoming Challenges
Brock Whiston, from Romford, competed in four events at the 2024 Paralympics, earning both gold and silver. We sat down with Brock to discuss her mental and physical preparation for such a demanding schedule, her incredible achievements, and what’s next for her.
How did you mentally and physically prepare for such a demanding schedule of four events?
“I actually enjoy having a range of different events to compete in. It means my training is never all on the same stroke, which makes it more exciting. But when I’m racing, I focus on one event at a time and not let the performances of previous swims get in the way of others.”

How did it feel the moment you realised you had won a gold medal?
“I couldn’t quite believe it, it was a shock. I was so determined to give it everything after my 100m breaststroke. I wanted to leave everything I had in the pool. It was so nice because my coach and family have sacrificed so much to support me, and it was just great to show them that their efforts were worth it.”
You also won silver in the SB8 100m breaststroke. How did that experience differ from your 200m individual medley?
“The 100m breaststroke was my first event at a Paralympics, and I didn’t fully anticipate how big and loud the crowd would be. I think I put too much pressure on myself. For the individual medley, I knew exactly what to expect and just gave it everything I had.”

What was the toughest moment for you across all your races, and how did you push through?
“Probably the toughest part was only having one day off from either training or competing in over three weeks. It’s the longest period I’ve ever done. But I reminded myself that this is what I train for, and my love for the sport made it easier to push through.”
With multiple races, how did you balance recovery to ensure peak performance?
“I love a good nap! I made sure to nap whenever I had the chance. I also focused on soft tissue recovery and did things that I enjoy to stay relaxed and happy.”

What’s your favourite memory from the Paralympics?
“Being on the podium after winning my gold medal, looking up to see all my family and friends—everything felt like a dream.”
Now that you’ve secured gold and silver, what’s next for you?
“Just carrying on with swimming, doing what I enjoy. We’re going to work on some skills and drills to help me get even stronger.”
Any closing comments?
“I just want to say a massive thank you to Hawkins and sons butchers, my coach Stewart, my mum, and my boyfriend Perry for always believing in me and supporting me in my journey they don’t understand how much their support encourages me. I know my coach gives up so much of his free time to come and coach me and spend weekends at competitions without getting paid“
Well done Brock on your success!
