Tool theft has become an increasingly severe issue in Havering, with numerous incidents reported daily. Work vans are being targeted at an alarming rate, leading to significant distress and financial loss for local tradespeople.

At was two weeks ago that a van driver in Hornchurch reported an individual try and break into the back of his van whilst he was still sitting inside it.

In response to this growing problem, workers across Havering have banded together, forming WhatsApp groups to share details of thefts and suspicious activity.

These groups serve as a platform for members to quickly alert each other about break-ins and suspicious vehicles in the area. One group admin explained his motivation for setting up the group: “I started this group because the situation has become unbearable. Every day, someone else is getting hit, and we can’t rely on the police to be there every time. By sharing information, we can look out for each other and hopefully deter these thieves.”

Tool theft in Havering had reached the point of blatant and prolific daylight robbery, with criminals not only stealing tools but also causing significant damage to the vehicles they break into, further exacerbating the economic impact on victims. Tradespeople face substantial repair costs and the loss of expensive tools vital to their livelihoods.

Residents had voiced their frustration with the perceived lack of police response. One group member told the Havering Daily, “When asked, I’ve even had police state they know who’s doing it. So why is it still happening?”

However, in recent weeks, the police have stepped up their efforts to tackle this issue. Recognising the severity of the situation, they have begun to engage more actively with the workmen affected by the thefts. The police have started collaborating with community groups, attending meetings, and taking on board the concerns and information shared by residents. They have also promised to implement stronger measures to combat tool theft, including increased patrols and targeted operations.

The police have acknowledged the community’s frustrations and assured them that more robust action is being taken. They have committed to investigating leads provided by residents more thoroughly and are working to improve the communication between law enforcement and the community.

This shift in police engagement is a welcome development for Havering’s tradespeople. While the threat of tool theft remains, the increased police presence and their proactive approach offer some hope of alleviating the issue. The community, in turn, continues to support one another through their grassroots efforts, creating a network of vigilance and mutual aid in the face of ongoing challenges.
