Dagenham and Rainham MP calls for urgent action to clear drains as flooding starts across the area.
Road gullies and drains must be kept clear of blockages so that the drainage system is able to cope when there are downpours.
Margaret Mullane MP was contacted by worried residents in Brookway following the heavy rainfall on Sunday 8 September when water cascaded down the road and footpaths onto front gardens, threatening to flow into the houses.
The same residents experienced flooding to their homes in August 2020 during another heavy downpour. On that occasion several residents’ homes were uninhabitable for months following the water damage to the buildings. This time major damage was averted by local people going out into the road to help clear blocked drains.
Margaret told the Havering Daily: “I have been regularly contacting Havering Council since 2020 to call for them to clear the drains across Rainham Village, an area that suffered so badly.
Road gullies and drains must be kept clear of blockages so that the drainage system is able to cope when there are downpours. Due to the actions of residents, it seems that none of the buildings were flooded, but from the images I have seen, this was a close shave.”
Margaret added: “There is a specific issue in Brookway. Along this stretch of Brookway the carriageway is higher than the footpath and front gardens of the houses. When the drains in the road are blocked or unable to cope with the level of rainfall, it flows down over the grass verge and into the gardens threatening the houses.
I have called on Havering to clear the gullies in the carriageway as a matter of urgency and also the drains set in the grassed verges. This should help keep local homes safe and reassure families.”
