Councillor calls on locals to volunteer patrol Rainham to keep community safe.
‘Let’s do our bit to keep each other safe and be a visible presence’-Councillor Sue Ospreay.
Residents in Rainham are fed up with the increase in anti social behaviour and watching the general decline in their area.
Yesterday, Dagenham and Rainham MP Margaret Mullane joined Rainham ward councillor Sue Ospreay to discuss all the poignant issues in the area. The two representatives spoke openly about the challenges Rainham is facing and how they both would like to see a more visible police presence in the area.
After fourteen years of cuts to our force, Havering struggles to have the number of officers out and about on the streets as a visible deterrent as we should have.
Now, Councillor Ospreay is calling on local residents to come and be volunteers to walk around Rainham and be a visible support for those in need.
Sue told the Havering Daily: “If people can spare an hour or two a week, we can all do our bit for the local community. Just being a visible presence in the area can help. Walking the streets and reassuring locals is a big step forward.
“It is not about doing the police’s job, but being a support on the streets that we desperately need. It is all well and good to vent on social media, but if you want to truly help, come and be a volunteer.”
The aim is to walk different parts of Rainham wearing a high visibility jacket that says ‘Happy to Help’ on the back and support the local community by simply being visible and supporting others.
“We can all play our part in making the area better and helping each other out is vital. Especially now that children are returning to school, it is good to have volunteers out on the street during school closing time.”
