Library users, political campaigners and staff unions will hold a rally to save our library services outside the Town Hall next Wednesday from 6:30pm.

Green Party activists organised the rally following the Havering Residents Association’s proposals to close four of the borough’s five branch libraries. Many across the political spectrum have come up with ideas for new revenue sources, for covering the cost of building works, and to make these libraries fit for the future. At next Wednesday’s council meeting, at least four petitions and a motion against the closure proposals will be presented.

Mark Whiley, Green Party campaigner for Squirrels Heath ward told the Havering Daily: “Libraries are not just places to access knowledge or to be inspired through the timeless act of telling stories. They are one of the few community spaces we have left where you don’t have to pay the price of two coffees to be with other people. They provide study spaces, warm spaces, a place for connection, and a place for a wide range of community activities.”

“We believe that the cost to the community of permanently losing library services and community facilities is not worth a small saving out of the council’s total annual budget. There are alternatives.”

All are welcome to attend between 6:30pm and 7:30pm. It’s expected that photos and videos will be taken by the local media.

Havering Police have been informed of the rally to ensure everyone’s personal safety, and we will ask anyone engaging in behaviour that disrupts the event to move on.
