Margaret Mullane, Labour MP for Dagenham and Rainham, has raised the issue of fire safety with the Government Minister and local councils in the wake of the devastating fire at Spectrum House in Dagenham.

Margaret told the Havering Daily: “I want to see the fire investigation report that the London Fire Brigade is preparing into the cause of the fire and of the building safety failures that contributed to placing the lives of the more than 80 residents’ lives at risk and the loss of the 60 apartments.

But ahead of that I have written to the Government Minister with responsibility for Building Safety, Rushanara Ali to ask for the list of all blocks of flats in Dagenham and Rainham that have non compliant building cladding. I want to know which blocks have had applications from their owners for funding under the Building Safety Fund and Private Sector ACM Cladding Remediation Fund where the work to remove the cladding has not been completed.

In addition to that, I have written to the Chief Executives of LB Barking & Dagenham and LB Havering to ask them for all details of all blocks of flats in the Dagenham and Rainham which have building cladding which does not conform to safety standards or other combustible material on the external walls.”

Margaret has praised the work of firefighters for their professional efficiency and bravery in ensuring the safe evacuation of residents and bringing the inferno under control.

She added: “My thanks go to the local business community and Asda. The store stepped up to provide support to residents from Spectrum House who were at the Council rest centre set up at the Becontree Heath Leisure Centre with a goods donation and also a donation of £1,000 to provide clothing, toiletries and school uniforms.

The local community has also been fantastic, rallying around with donations and support to the families who have lost all their belongings.”
